Text Editor Hyperlinks: Open a Selected URL Without Editing the Manuscript
Opening a hyperlink while a manuscript remains editable can lead to accidental changes: a trailing period becomes part of the address, a selection is replaced, or the cursor moves into the link. A safer pattern is to select only the URL and invoke a separate open command. Rune Studio documents Cmd+D for sending a selected or recognized URL to the external browser.
Separate reading the destination from fixing the text
Consider this line:

First verify the destination. Edit the address only after you know it is wrong. Select from https:// through the final path character, excluding punctuation and closing brackets. In a Markdown link, select the URL inside the parentheses rather than the visible label.
This small separation preserves a clear history: opening is an inspection action; typing is a manuscript change.
What Rune Studio documents
Rune Studio’s product material describes opening a selected URL—or a URL recognized on the cursor line—with Cmd+D in the external browser. The command is not described as rewriting Markdown link syntax.
For this article, we did not complete a live Cmd+D browser launch. Keyboard shortcuts, URL recognition, and the default-browser handoff should therefore be verified on the user’s Mac before the action becomes part of a production routine.
Test three shapes in a disposable file
Create one line containing only a URL, one sentence with an inline URL, and one Markdown link such as [Guide](https://example.com/guide). For each case:
- select only the address;
- press
Cmd+D; - inspect the address that the browser received;
- return to the editor and confirm the manuscript text is unchanged.
If you plan to rely on cursor-line recognition, add a line containing two URLs and see which one is chosen. This is a local visual check, not a behavior guaranteed by this article.
When the handoff fails, inspect leading or trailing whitespace, full-width punctuation, and the macOS default-browser setting. Copying the address and pasting it into a browser remains a clear fallback.
A loaded page is not yet a verified source
Check whether the site redirected to another address, whether the cited section still exists, and whether the page is the authoritative source you intended. A browser launch confirms navigation, not factual reliability.
If the link needs repair, confirm the replacement address in the browser first. Then return to the manuscript and edit it deliberately. Search for repeated copies if the same URL appears elsewhere.
Best for individual editorial checks
This workflow suits occasional source links, footnotes, and Markdown references encountered during drafting. It is not a batch link checker. Hundreds of URLs call for a dedicated crawler or validation tool, followed by reviewed edits in the manuscript.
