Fast manuscript switching in a text editor tree view is not established by an unsupported time claim. This article accepts a transition only when it uses one selection, requires no repeated search, and reaches the path registered in the authoritative path map. The test has five states including S0 and four transitions. Record start time, end time, action count, repeated-search status, and destination path for every transition.
The speed of this four-transition route has not been measured. It is a reader test plan. Hands-on evidence confirms tree, tab, and expanded-state reload only.
Use the part/chapter/section hierarchy design to decide the hierarchy, and use the twelve-file ID ledger to maintain the manifest. Automatic outline generation, cloud synchronization, collaboration, and restoration of unsaved text after quitting remain outside this article.
Fix the route as five states and four transitions
The complete route is:
Start at S0 with C04 → transition 1 to the character sheet → transition 2 to current C07 → transition 3 to archived C07 → transition 4 back to C04
The initial state is not a switch action. The active target changes four times, so the correct count is four transitions. Write the start time immediately before selecting the target and the end time after checking its path. Put current ID, tab name, action count, repeated-search status, full path, and unsaved tab on the same row.
One action means selecting the intended row once from an already expanded tree. Reopening tree search, hunting through folders, or opening several same-named tabs to identify the target breaks the one-selection condition. Calculate elapsed time from the timestamps, but do not invent a passing number of seconds before the route is measured.
Map ID, tab name, and full path one to one
The test uses these four artifacts.

Current and archived C07 both use the real filename and tab label C07.md. Do not substitute an unsupported display alias. Their evidence is the C07 versus A-C07 ID and the manuscript versus archive parent path.
Create unsaved C04 in initial state S0
Open manuscript/chapters/C04.md, add test ID U-C04-01, and leave it unsaved. The S0 row records:
- current ID: C04;
- tab name: C04.md;
- full path: manuscript/chapters/C04.md;
- unsaved tab: C04.md.
U-C04-01 tracks unsaved content in the open session. It is not evidence that the application restores that text after termination.
Transition 1: C04 to the character sheet
Open references/characters.md. The current ID becomes R-CHAR-01 and the current tab becomes characters.md. Verify separately that the unsaved indicator still belongs to the C04.md tab.
Tree selection color is not sufficient evidence. Record current tab and full path together so a selected tree row cannot be confused with content remaining in another editor tab.
Transition 2: character sheet to current C07
Open manuscript/chapters/C07.md. Record ID C07, tab C07.md, and role authoritative source. Confirm that the C04 unsaved indicator did not move to C07.
Do not decide authority from modification time or vertical position in the tree. Match C07 and manuscript/chapters/C07.md against the source inventory.
Transition 3: current C07 to archived C07
Open archive/old/C07.md. Its tab still says C07.md, but its ID is A-C07 and its parent path is archive/old. Mark this row “archived, no edit.”
Do not delete the wrong-entrance row from the record. Recognizing the archived source from its parent path before editing is part of the acceptance evidence.
Transition 4: archived C07 back to C04
Return to manuscript/chapters/C04.md. In the final state, verify the authoritative path, visible U-C04-01, and the C04.md unsaved indicator together.
The test fails if U-C04-01 is absent, the unsaved indicator belongs to another tab, or an archived C04 is open. Compare S0 and final C04 to separate the active target that may change from the unsaved state that must remain attached.
Fill the five-state, four-transition measurement sheet
S0 is the baseline before switching. Record its baseline time, current ID, full path, and unsaved tab. For transitions 1 through 4, record start time before selection and end time after checking the destination path.

Accept a transition only when all three conditions hold: one selection, no repeated search, and a destination path matching the authoritative path map. Transition 3 intentionally opens the archive entry registered as A-C07, so verify archive/old/C07.md and do not edit it. If any row includes reselection or repeated search, leave the fast-switching conclusion pending.

Call the route fast only after all three criteria pass
Before switching, freeze the authoritative C04 path, U-C04-01, and its unsaved indicator on S0. Then preserve timestamps, action count, repeated-search status, and destination path for all four transitions.
The route can be accepted as switching without repeated exploration only when manuscript/chapters/C04.md, visible U-C04-01, and the C04.md unsaved indicator appear together at the end and every transition passes one selection, no repeated search, and authoritative-path match.
