Compare a Creative Manuscript with Reference Notes in Two Panes

Two panes help only if you can prove which passage is paired with which reference. Use matching section IDs and filenames as anchors. Do not assume that equal vertical positions mean equal story content after one side gains a table, quotation, or several extra paragraphs.

For a creative writing text editor, the practical goal is to compare a manuscript with its reference material without losing the active chapter.

The controlled Rune Studio setup paired six manuscript chapters with six reference sections using REF-01 through REF-06. A two-pane linked-scroll layout opened a corresponding tab on each side. The observed result supports the setup, while arrival still has to be checked by ID and filename.

Pair the files before opening the layout

Create a map outside the editor:

Left manuscript Right reference Anchor Question
draft/ch01.md refs/ref01.md REF-01 protagonist age
draft/ch02.md refs/ref02.md REF-02 harbor geography
draft/ch03.md refs/ref03.md REF-03 chronology
three more pairs corresponding files REF-04–06 clothing, naming, setup

The IDs do not discover relationships. They preserve a relationship the writer has already decided.

Set up one reliable comparison

Lock the left and right roles

Open draft/ch01.md on the left and refs/ref01.md on the right. Write down both filenames before enabling linked scrolling. If a tab changes, update the note immediately.

Land on the same anchor

Find REF-01 in both panes and place each view at that line. A left pane at REF-01 and a right pane at REF-02 is not a valid pair even if the paragraphs appear aligned.

Link only a short interval

Enable linked scrolling and move through one paragraph. Compare names, dates, numbers, and causal statements. If one side contains a long insert, disable linking and navigate both panes to the next shared ID.

Use concrete unlink rules:

Turn nine possible differences into decisions

Suppose the six pairs produce nine candidates. Classify each as:

A durable note looks like REF-03 | ch03.md | ref03.md | dates differ by one year | factual | check timeline. The ID and two filenames matter more than a screenshot of the scroll position.

Test the return path

Move to another pair, then return to REF-01. Confirm ch01.md on the left, ref01.md on the right, and the same anchor on both sides. If you can reproduce the destination after tabs have changed, the comparison record is useful.

Rune Studio’s published capabilities include multi-row and multi-column splits, moving tabs between panes, anchor-based linked scrolling, and saved layouts. In the controlled run, six paired IDs were prepared, a two-pane linked-scroll layout was enabled, and corresponding tabs opened on both sides.

The run did not prove that visible scroll heights remain semantically aligned, and it did not classify the nine differences. Those judgments stay with the writer.

The comparison rule

Keep six fields: left file, right file, anchor ID, unlink condition, difference class, and return destination. That record survives scroll drift and closed tabs.

Begin with one REF-01 pair and a single paragraph. Writers who want manuscript and reference notes visible together can review Rune Studio’s current layout features on the product page.
