Bulk Replace Across Multiple Files with Preview and Reverse Search

An abstract editorial 3D still life illustrating Bulk Replace Across Multiple Files with Preview and Reverse Search

Bulk replacement belongs to cases where one rule is correct for every included match. Before changing ten chapters, fix the expected target count and the excluded reference count. Preview all contexts, apply only the approved scope, and reverse-search the old term afterward.

Decide whether the rule is truly uniform

A company-name change or a fixed punctuation correction may suit bulk replacement. A verb whose spelling depends on meaning does not. One ambiguous match is enough to exclude that location or abandon the bulk operation.

Efficiency cannot justify changing quoted material or a different sense of the same word.

Write include and exclude scopes

If manuscript chapters live in chapters and source notes live in refs, include the chapter working copies and exclude the notes. For twelve old spellings in the chapters and four in references, the intended postcondition is zero in the included scope and four in the excluded scope.

Inspect filenames in the preview as well as the total. Backups and exports can hide inside a manuscript folder.

Preview in Rune Studio before applying

Read file, line, and context for every proposed replacement. A controlled workspace found six matches across three files, previewed six, applied six, and returned zero old terms in the reverse search. That confirms the preview-apply-reverse route for the sample, not semantic correctness for other words.

Unexpected counts stop the operation. Do not rewrite the expected note to make a preview look correct.

Validate the consumer after replacement

A correct old-term and new-term count does not guarantee that a configuration file or source file still parses. After Rune Studio reports zero old matches and the expected new matches, run the relevant test or load the files in their destination application. If that environment is unavailable, inspect the diff for damaged quotes, brackets, separators, and line endings, then state that runtime behavior remains unverified. Search success and application success are separate checks.

Verify both the old and new forms

After applying, reverse-search the old spelling within the included scope and search the new spelling for context. Count agreement is necessary, but sentences must still read naturally.

Rune Studio is useful for uniform terminology changes across manuscript files. Context-sensitive editing should remain manual. Check current replacement scope on the Rune Studio product page, then write the twelve included and four excluded locations before opening the replace control.
